“Ties Forged Through the Skies”: Ibaraki Prefecture Governor Visits Chungbuk’s Kim Young-hwan
- Discussion focuses on expanding bilateral exchange via the only direct international route among regional airports -
Governor Kim Young-hwan welcomed a distinguished guest on Thursday, November?13, meeting with Governor Kazuhiko Oigawa of Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture at the Chungcheongbuk-do Office to discuss ways to broaden exchanges through the direct air route connecting the two regions.
During their first meeting, Governors Kim and Oigawa agreed to pursue deeper cooperation across various sectors, including tourism, culture, industry, and business.
Governor Oigawa expressed his hope that the direct flight would revitalize tourism exchanges between Chungbuk and Ibaraki. Governor Kim responded by noting that the air route could serve as a foundation for stronger cooperation and shared development between the two regions.
Governor Oigawa’s visit follows the launch of Aero K Airlines’ direct Cheongju?Ibaraki route in May.
After securing a third term in Japan’s local elections in September, Governor Oigawa initiated this visit to discuss ways to expand bilateral cooperation through the Cheongju?Ibaraki route.
The Cheongju?Ibaraki service is the first air link between the two regions. Notably, it is the only direct international route currently operated from Cheongju among Korea’s regional airports, drawing significant attention upon its launch.
Ibaraki Prefecture, located adjacent to Tokyo, is known as a research hub for Japan’s cutting-edge industries and is also recognized for its strong agriculture, fisheries, and tourism sectors.
Major tourist attractions include Hitachi Seaside Park and Mount Tsukuba. With 114 golf courses and a mild climate with little snowfall, the region is also renowned as a golfer’s paradise.
Aero K Airlines currently operates the Cheongju?Ibaraki route three times a week―on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays―with flights departing Cheongju at 14:00.

- Beauty Festa launches simultaneously, linked with local beauty industry -
- Boosting urban tourism in Cheongju and fostering specialized local districts -
Chungcheongbuk-do is creating a new tourism and shopping hub near Seongan-gil, a key commercial district in downtown Cheongju, and simultaneously launching a large-scale beauty festival to invigorate the local economy and attract domestic and international tourists.
On Saturday, November 8, Chungcheongbuk-do hosted a dual event at the Cheoldanggan Square at the Yongdusa Temple Site in Cheongju: the opening ceremony for C-SQUARE, the travel lounge centerpiece of the 2025 Regional Shopping Tourism Infrastructure Project, and the launch of the major festival, Beautiful-C Festa 2025.
Located near Cheoldanggan Square (21 Sangdang-ro 55beon-gil, Cheongju), the travel lounge C-SQUARE is a multi-purpose cultural space designed to enhance the shopping experience for international tourists.
With a total investment of KRW?100?million, the lounge features trendy interiors and provides a distinct rest area for visitors. It also serves as a promotional hub where visitors can experience and learn about high-quality beauty products made in Chungbuk.
In addition, it provides comprehensive travel support services, including rest areas, accommodation and transportation booking, and the “C-PASS” shopping voucher program, further enhancing the overall travel experience and satisfaction of international visitors to Cheongju.
Coinciding with the lounge opening, Beautiful-C Festa 2025 will be held for two days, from November 8 to 9, in the area surrounding Cheoldanggan Square and Seongan-gil.
The festival, themed “Like a Journey in Daily Life,” features a variety of programs that both tourists and locals can enjoy together.
The festival includes beauty experience booths, performances by K-beauty influencers, random dance events, and various attractions. It also incorporates C-PASS-based events, shopping rewards, and a supporters’ familiarization tour to actively draw visitors to Seongan-gil, Seomun Market, and Sonamu-gil, thereby promoting local businesses.
Jeong Seon-mi, Director of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Chungcheongbuk-do, stated, “The opening of the Travel Lounge and hosting of the Beauty Festa are important steps toward establishing Cheongju as a new hub for urban shopping tourism and improving convenience for international visitors.” She added, “We will continue to develop diverse content that connects our regional beauty industry with tourism to help revitalize the local economy.”
