– Official opening on March 31, preserving the historical and cultural values of the space – The main building of the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Government, originally constructed in 1937, will reopen after 90 years with a new purpose. The Cultural Space Development Project for the provincial government’s main building has been underway since March 2024 and has finally come to an end. The space will refunction as a cultural complex under the name, “Picture Book Garden 1937,” with its official opening on March 31. This opening holds special significance as it marks a historic transformation of a landmark of modern governmental architecture into a cultural hub embedded in the everyday lives of residents across generations. The site was once a recreational space where residents would skate, exercise, and relax. Built in 1937, the provincial government building has since witnessed liberation, war, industrialization, and the development of local autonomy, making it a symbolic structure that has shared the history of Chungcheongbuk-do. Featuring a red-brick exterior and symmetrical architectural design, the building was officially recognized for its historical and architectural values when it was designated as Registered Cultural Heritage No. 55 in 2003. Rather than demolishing the structure or significantly altering its exterior, the project focused on preserving the original form while highlighting its historical value. The texture of the red bricks and the original spatial structure, long hidden by time, were restored, and the interior was reorganized into a culture- and experience-oriented space while respecting the existing architectural framework. This approach expands the building’s function while preserving its historical identity. Picture Book Garden 1937 is a multi-cultural complex where exhibitions, experiences, and education are connected through picture books. The first floor features reading spaces for children and infants, along with domestic and international picture book collections. The second floor will host exhibitions by artists Jung Seung-gak and Elena Selena. The third floor includes a pop-up book exhibition area, makerspace, AI space, history archive, and education rooms offering hands-on programs. This opening also represents the completion of broader spatial reorganization around the provincial government complex. From a public space and an administrative center to a cultural space—this marks a new phase in Chungcheongbuk-do’s spatial history. Governor Kim Young-hwan stated, “Two years ago, I made a promise to return the provincial government’s main building to the citizens. This opening fulfills that promise and serves as a fresh beginning for Chungcheongbuk-do’s cultural policy. I hope this place will become a cultural center where generations can gather together.” Following the opening, Chungcheongbuk-do plans to expand regular exhibitions and educational programs while strengthening connections with nearby cultural facilities, further developing Picture Book Garden 1937 into a representative cultural hub of the region.
