150, 70, and 20. These numbers represent the remarkable lifespans of the aquatic creatures swimming in the main tank of the Chungbuk Fisheries Park Aquarium in Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do.

From sturgeons that can live up to 150 years, to koi fish with lifespans reaching 70 years—comparable to those of humans—and crucian carp that live beyond 20 years, visitors are deeply moved by the realization that these aquatic creatures share long lives alongside humanit. They are especially touched by the profound bonds the fish have developed over time.

An Underwater Drama Lasting 60 Minutes

Hugging, Begging, and Showing Affection: A Friendship Beyond Species

The underwater interaction performance (feeding show), held every weekend at 2 PM at Chungbuk Aquarium, has evolved beyond simple entertainment into a meaningful experience where humans and fish form emotional connections.

Throughout the one-hour performance, astonishing scenes unfold inside the tank. As soon as the scuba diver enters the water, dozens of fish swarm around the diver, repeatedly swimming into the diver’s arms and nestling close, drawing amazement from visitors.

In particular, some fish display emotional behaviors often associated with highly intelligent creatures, such as begging the diver for food like pets or rubbing against the diver affectionately.

These responses from fish, apparently remembering two years of devoted care, are overturning the common misconception that fish have low intelligence. Visitors watching from beyond the tank begin to see fish not merely as objects of display, but as sentient beings capable of emotional connection with humans.

Reconsidering the Value of Life: Emerging as a Landmark of Chungbuk

To deepen these emotional interactions, Chungbuk Aquarium has enhanced its viewing environment by adding two additional sets of scuba equipment. This allows divers to interact more safely and meaningfully with the fish, creating richer moments of connection.

In addition, the aquarium plans to host a special sweetfish exhibition beginning in May, offering visitors a new experience of communication and connection amid shimmering silver waves.

Lee Byeong-min, Head of the Fisheries Park Industry Division, stated, “Koi fish that live for 70 years and sturgeons that live for 150 years are companions sharing the journey of life with us.” He added, “The sight of fish affectionately embracing divers demonstrates that the value of their lives is no less than our own. We hope this place becomes a healing space where people and nature genuinely connect.”

Visitors can experience Chungbuk Aquarium’s underwater interaction performance—where humans and fish build trust over time—every Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM at Goesan Fisheries Park.
