Expected to play a dual leading role with KAIST Osong campus as the core of K-bio Square -
On Friday, the 16th, Chungcheongbuk-do Province announced that it held a kickoff meeting at the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation to begin a feasibility study for establishing a Global R&D Clinical Research Center. The meeting was attended by Governor Kim Young-hwan of Chungcheongbuk-do, representatives from Seoul National University Hospital, Lee Myung-soo, Chairman of the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation, Kim Dae-soo, Dean of the Department of Biological Sciences at KAIST, and Lee Kyu-sun, Head of the Research Strategy Division at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. The Global R&D Clinical Research Center aims to conduct clinical trials for new drugs being developed by various innovative institutions and companies, including KAIST, the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and the Osong Medical Innovation Foundation. In particular, the Global R&D Clinical Research Center is expected to establish itself as a new type of research hospital and, along with the Osong Biomedical Campus, become a dual engine and core institution driving K-Bio Square. Furthermore, the province expects the center to transcend the capital region-centric treatment system by conducting national clinical research on complex and severe diseases, thus addressing gaps in public healthcare and positioning itself as a central hub for public medical services in the central region. Governor Kim stated, “As Korean pharmaceutical companies expand technology exports and enter global clinical trials, it is urgent to build a domestic infrastructure capable of handling full-cycle clinical trials. We will closely analyze case studies such as MGH in the U.S. and Karolinska Hospital in Sweden to develop a world-class R&D clinical research center.” Meanwhile, Chungcheongbuk-do is striving to have the establishment of the Global R&D Clinical Research Center reflected in presidential campaign pledges and plans to actively persuade the government once the study is completed in October. |
