내용 - Cheongnamdae to be used as a place to host guests of local governments and to hold small and mid-sized conventions, international conferences, etc. -

Chungcheongbuk-do Governor Kim Young-hwan posted on his Facebook account on Sep. 17 that he would propose the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) to use Cheongnamdae, a popular tourist attraction located near Daecheongho Lake, as the country’s second state guest house.

Governor Kim argued, "If the government decides to use Cheongnamdae as the nation’s second state guest house, it can also be used as a place to host foreign guests of local governments as well as to hold small and medium-sized conventions and international conferences, significantly boosting the value of Cheongnamdae," and added, "It can be used as a banquet hall of the administrative capital as it is located near Sejong Special Self-Governing City (40 km away) as well.”

Governor Kim also said, "Cheongnamdae is the best place to serve as a state guest house considering its magnificent garden that is second to none in the world and beautiful landscapes surrounding Daecheongho Lake. It will become a great opportunity to promote Chungcheongbuk-do’s Lake Park.”

Cheongnamdae (Munui-myeon, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do) was built during the era of former President Chun Doo-hwan (completed in 1983) and was once a private villa used by former presidents of Korea. It became open to the public during the presidency of former President Roh Moo-hyun in 2003 and approximately 13 million visited the place (as of the end of 2021).

Chungcheongbuk-do has run the place as a lake shelter for the public by creating presidential trail (walkway), pond, sequoia forest, lawn plaza, sky garden, and gallery near the forest and lake surrounding the presidential villa (main building).

The local government has also built Presidential History and Culture Hall, History Education Hall of Provisional Government, and Provisional Government Memorial Hall to nurture Cheongnamdae as a tourist destination of the public as the one and only facility in Korea tailored to former presidents including the president of provisional government, etc.

Cheongnamdae, which means 'Cheong Wa Dae in a warm southern land' was originally called as Yeongchunjae (lit. "spring season welcome house") when the construction was completed. Here, 'spring' refers to 'pleasant and valued guests.’

Meanwhile, Governor Kim instructed to provide operational guidelines on Aug. 24 so that Cheongnamdae can be used as a state guest house.
