Chungcheongbuk-do Governor Kim young-hwan signed an MOU on Oct. 26 with Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa and his delegation visiting Chungcheongbuk-do to promote international cooperation in an effort to develop new markets for export to Africa.

Tanzania is the biggest country in East Africa with a population of 63 million and is considered an important hub for export to Africa.

Tanzania's delegation of Medical Stores Department (MSD) is in charge of imports and sales of medicines and medical devices for 16 Eastern and Southern African countries.

Governor Kim's meeting with PM Majaliwa and his delegation served as a follow-up to Tanzanian Ambassador to Korea H.E. Togolani Edriss Mavura's attendance at Chungbuk Biohealth Conference (Aug. 24) and the meeting of Chungcheongbuk-do's director for bioindustry with MSD Director-General on his visit to Tanzania (Sep. 1) in order to promote trade in biohealth and strengthen exchanges.

The meeting was attended ten economy and pharmaceutical officials including PM Majaliwa and his delegation of Medical Stores Department (MSD) director-general, Medicines & Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) director-general, and Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) executive director as well as representatives and executives from Celltrion, HK inno.N, Dongkook Pharmaceutical, SD Biosensor, Kcellbio Banking, and Optipharm, and officials from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. During the meeting, parties from the two countries discussed political plans for biohealth export and working-level cooperation between enterprises and regulatory agencies.

Chungcheongbuk-do then concluded an MOU with MSD, both agreeing to cooperate for more exchanges in health and medicine by exchanging information to export Chungbuk’s biohealth products to Tanzania, supporting the growth of the biohealth industry of Tanzania, and fostering a biohealth workforce.

After the meeting, they visited Korea’s best bio cluster Osong Bio Valley and looked around Chungbuk’s excellent bio infrastructure. In addition, they learned about Korea’s current biohealth workforce and witnessed the entire development and manufacturing processes of new drugs and medical devices at New Drug Development Center, Medical Device Development Center, Laboratory Center, and Biopharmaceuticals Manufacturing Center of Osong Medical Innovation Foundation.

Governor Kim said, “I am pleased to meet with PM Majaliwa and sign an MOU. We will do our best to widely promote Chungbuk’s outstanding biohealth products through new African markets.”
