CBFEZ Tenant Company Cocoon Achieves Global Market Expansion Milestone
내용 - Saudi Salam Veterinary Group adopts Cocoon's biobank technology - A tangible outcome of Free Economic Zone business support, enabling a research company in the Osong Advanced Medical Complex to secure global cooperation -

The Chungbuk Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Choi Bok-soo) announced that Cocoon Co., Ltd., a tenant company in the Chungbuk Free Economic Zone, signed an MOU on "biobank establishment and research cooperation in the veterinary field" with Salam Veterinary Group (SVG) on October 14 in Al Qassim, Saudi Arabia.
Founded in 2015, Cocoon is Korea's only specialized biobanking company. The company has demonstrated the stability and reliability of its biobank and research-data analysis solutions, as well as its AI-based infectious disease prediction services, through joint projects with leading domestic bio and medical institutions including the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), and the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (NIAS) .
SVG is a leading institution in livestock and animal health innovation, a key goal of Saudi Vision 2030. It operates the world's largest animal hospital, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, and maintains extensive laboratory networks. SVG also operates clinical care, research, and surveillance networks for a wide range of animal groups, such as camels, horses, companion animals, and wildlife, along with breeding and genetic improvement programs.
However, SVG lacked an integrated system and resource banking infrastructure to comprehensively manage its extensive livestock and wildlife resources. While seeking a partner with both an advanced resource management system and AI capabilities, SVG became aware of Cocoon at the recommendation of CBFEZ and Chungbuk National University. SVG highly evaluated Cocoon's technical capabilities and overseas project experience and proposed cooperation.
To verify Cocoon's capabilities and credibility, SVG reportedly conducted a detailed review of Cocoon's project history with major Korean institutions and its overseas performance. As a result, SVG decided to partner with Cocoon to build resource management and infectious disease prediction systems in Saudi Arabia.
According to the agreement, the two organizations plan to pursue a phased series of cooperation projects, including the establishment and operation of the Salam Veterinary Group Biobank, the development of an AI- and GIS-based infectious disease prediction and monitoring system, and the identification of genetic biomarkers related to livestock productivity and disease resistance.
In the second half of this year, the parties plan to develop a detailed cooperation roadmap and initiate a project to build an ICT-based biobank that integrates and manages samples and data collected from SVG-affiliated hospitals, farms, and laboratories.
In addition, Cocoon plans to link the SVG biobank with the biobank it built in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park through the KOICA Inclusive Business Solutions (IBS) Program over the past five years, thereby developing a global biobank network connecting high value-added resources in Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and Korea.
Cocoon began as a tenant company in CBFEZ's business support facilities and established a research institute in the Osong Advanced Medical Complex and strengthened the foundation for global cooperation, with the support of CBFEZ, including technology promotion, provision of business space, and global networking programs.
This achievement is evaluated as a representative case demonstrating the virtuous cycle of business support policy in the Free Economic Zone, business support for capability enhancement, to overseas expansion, operating effectively in practice. CBFEZ plans to actively promote the overseas cooperation outcomes of tenant companies based on this agreement and further strengthen support for technology commercialization and global network development.
In this regard, Commissioner Choi Bok-soo said, "The cooperation between Cocoon and a Saudi organization is an exemplary success case in which the Chungbuk Free Economic Zone's stage-by-stage support translated into tangible overseas outcomes." He added, "Going forward, we will continue to support the global expansion of research companies and strengthen the international competitiveness of K-Bio, centered on the Osong Advanced Medical Complex.“
