Full-scale construction of CBfez Cheongju Aeropolis District 1, which will create a rotorcraft (helicopter) maintenance complex, begins at the end of this month.

Originally, Chungbuk Province tried to create this area as an aircraft-centered maintenance complex. But when it failed, it changed the direction of development to maintenance of rotorcraft.

According to CFfez (on Nov 13), the construction of Aeropolis District 1 will start at the end of this month.

The total area of District 1, which will be created in Naesu-eup, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju-si, is 133,000㎡, and the completion of construction is scheduled for Dec 2022.

CBfez will start selling sites from the first half of next year. Of the total area, the industrial site for companies will be 98,220 m2.

Prior to the sale, CBfez will get approval from the Chungbuk Provincial Council and the Cheongju City Council. CBfez will include the District 1 Project in the plan for the shared property between the Province and City and submit it to the council in Jan 2021.

CBfez received approval on the change of the development plan of Cheongju Aeropolis District 1 from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in July.

In order to foster the rotorcraft and the aviation industry based in Cheongju International Airport, CBfez has changed the business category to attract and expanded the site for industrial facilities.

With this approval, the category of businesses to move into District 1 has been changed from aircraft parts manufacturing to aviation maintenance and transportation.

Accordingly, Cheongju Aeropolis District 1 will be re-promoted as a rotorcraft maintenance complex after 3 years. There concerns that it would turn out to be a sour lemon after Asiana Airlines abandoned its Maintenance, Repair and Operation (MRO) of aircrafts in Cheongju in Aug 2016.

Accepting expert opinion that it was the best place for rotorcraft maintenance, CBfez and Chungbuk Province changed the direction of development from aircraft maintenance to take advantage of the best accessibility for helicopter maintenance distributed across the country.

In Oct of the same year, they took first step in the business by signing an investment agreement worth about KRW200 with three specialized rotorcraft maintenance companies.

It is known that about 1,000 helicopters are operated by the private sector and ROK Army in Korea, and three or four maintenance companies exclusively maintain about 200 helicopters.

CBfez and Chungbuk Provice set a goal to emerge as the center of helicopter maintenance by attracting these companies.

They are planning to establish District 1 as an “Aviation Maintenance Innovation Growth Cluster” in connection with Cheongju Aeropolis Districts 2 and 3, which are currently being promoted.

“We will carry out the business without any problems so that Cheongju Aeropolis can become the center of rotorcraft maintenance,” an official from CBfez said. “Expectations for the revitalization of the airport economy in the central region are also growing.”
