Smooth Cruising for Cheongju Airport Complex New City Project
- Chungbuk Province plans to conduct a feasibility study, and reflect the results in the master plan of Cheongju City Chungbuk Province is working hard to prepare a “Complex New City” to be built around Cheongju International Airport. A research project to draw up a blueprint is in progress, and results of the project are being reflected in the master plan of Cheongju City. According to Chungbuk Province (on Nov 29), Cheongju City, the Chungbuk Research Institute, and CBfez are in discussions to include a new complex city project in the “Cheongju City 2040 master Plan.” It is known that the officials recently met and discussed it. Having reflected this project in the “Fourth Comprehensive Plan for Chungbuk Province (2021-2040),” Chungbuk Province is undergoing a procedure for approval by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The intention of Chungbuk Province to include the project in its plans is to pave the way for future government support. This is because if it is specified in local government plans related to national land development, it will be easier to secure national funds. The creation of a new complex city was promoted as voices have been continuously raised about the need to expand the surrounding infrastructure to vitalize Cheongju Airport. Aeropolis development around the airport is also kicking into high gear. District 1 will be created as a maintenance industrial complex for rotorcraft (helicopters), and District 2 will be created to integrate companies such as aviation and logistics companies. In order for the project to succeed, it is essential to guarantee settlement conditions. After some consideration, Chungbuk Province decided to create a new complex city around Cheongju Airport, a plan to increase synergy with the airport by attracting residential complexes and industrial facilities near the airport. The complex new city is expected to become a new growth axis that will develop areas near Cheongju Airport. Currently, the Chungbuk Research Institute is conducting a basic design and a feasibility study. The results of this research project are expected to be released next March. The task is to establish a new development strategy to connect Cheongju Airport with the vicinity of the Aeropolis district, which is a free economic zone. It is to secure a base for promoting and attracting future high-tech industries related to aviation. It also aims to develop the northwestern region of Cheongju, which has been stagnant, into a new growth base. It also establishes a master and business promotion plan to create a new complex city with a population of 50,000. The research project also includes a plan to connect it with the construction of a metropolitan railway connecting Sejong-Osong-Cheongju Airport. “Systematic development is necessary to foster Cheongju Airport as a gateway airport to Sejong City and a hub airport in the central region,” an official from Chungbuk Province said. “We plan to promote the creation of a complex new city by establishing a plan to revitalize the city behind the airport.” |
